The "Mr. / Ms." Series: Pop Culture Through the Lens of the Stylized Paper Doll
From bande dessinée, manga, and American comics to art, history, cinema icons, and cult toys : discover how a single graphic template and a neutral pose become a playground for an endless exploration of character design.

Following the unveiling of the first pieces in the series, most recently "Ms. QUINN | 2016" (#10)- it is time to open the doors to the studio and share the vision behind this new graphic project: the "Mr. / Ms." collection, as envisioned by Éric Blanchot.

The Concept: The Paper Doll as a Universal Canvas
At the heart of this series lies a desire for synthesis and transposition: revisiting iconic figures from our collective imagination through a strictly codified visual language.
The inspiration draws from the concept of the "paper doll", a figure designed to be dressed in various outfits:
- A neutral mannequin: a static silhouette, presented strictly from a front-facing perspective.
- The identity filter: background colors, symbols, logos, hairstyles, color palettes, and costumes are used to bring each character to life within this singular mold.
- Temporal anchoring: each illustration is marked with its original year of creation, paying homage to the moment the icon first emerged within the collective imagination.
This is more than a simple caricature; it is a rigorous exercise in character design under constraint, distilling the very essence of a highly detailed icon to fit into this concise, synthetic format, all while ensuring the character remains instantly recognizable and retains its unique aura
« Reducing form to reveal the icon: the constraint of the template does not confine the character; rather, it extracts their visual essence and historical imprint. »

Early issues: a gallery without borders
The diversity of the initial issues perfectly illustrates the project’s philosophy: no genre is excluded, provided that the silhouette engages in a dialogue with its own era.
- Nº01 - Monsieur SUPER | 1938 (Comics / Heroic Age)
- Nº02 - Monsieur LANTERNE | 1940 (Comics / Golden Age)
- Nº03 - Monsieur DE NAZARETH | 0000 (History & Iconography)
- Nº04 - Monsieur IMHOTEP | 1932 (Horror Cinema / The Mummy)
- Nº05 - Madame WONDER | 1941 (Comics / The series’ first "Madame")
- Nº06 - Monsieur ROSE | 1963 ((Animation & Cinema)
- Nº07 - Monsieur MALTESE | 1967 (Comics / *Ligne Claire* & Adventure)
- Nº08 - Monsieur KAKAROT | 1984 (Manga / Shōnen & Pop Culture)
- N°09 - Madame BARBIE | 1959 (Cult Toys / Design, Fashion & Pop Icon)
- N°10 - Madame QUINN | 2016 (Comics & Cinéma / Modern Age)

And what comes next? The scope is set to expand even further. The goal is to intersect different worlds by drawing from music, historical figures, works of art, artists, and even the realm of toys, and more. Why not imagine, in the future, graphic mashups, unexpected crossovers between different eras, or various groupings and assemblages?

An Open, Participatory, and Curated Collection
This series is conceived as a living entity, designed to engage in a dialogue with the public:
- Behind the Scenes (Making-of): For each new piece, the creative process and graphic research are unveiled step-by-step across social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Threads, etc.).
- Interactivity: The ongoing integration of suggestions from the community to help shape future entries.
- Niche Themes & Portraits: An exploration of more independent, unconventional characters, alongside the creation of bespoke, commissioned portraits—all crafted within the same consistent format.
- Art Editions (In Development): As the symbolic milestone of the 10th character approaches, the question of formal editions naturally arises. There is no shortage of ideas, ranging from collector’s editions (numbered, signed fine-art prints for serious collectors) to more accessible, open-edition offerings (such as thematic postcard sets or open-run prints).

In Conclusion
The "Mr. / Ms." series serves as further proof that the subject matter is merely a pretext; it is the artist’s perspective, the precision of the line, the temporal anchor (the date), and the underlying graphic intent that weave the collection together.
