Making of BELLE-ÎLE EN MER
Telling Belle-Île in one image
A request: to imagine a visual capable of telling the story of the island in all its richness, through a multitude of viewpoints between ports, beaches and cliffs, nature, architecture, colors and lights.
Conceived to adorn the wall of a medical practice, the work was built step by step, blending memories, exchanges, and visual research. From the first sketch to the final fresco, this project explores how an illustration can become a space for escape and memory, at the crossroads of artistic creation and contemporary tools.

A request, an intention
The project was therefore born from a wonderful commission: to create an original illustration capable of telling the story of Belle-Île-en-Mer in a single image, designed to adorn a wall within a healthcare facility. An invitation to dream and escape, while bringing a soothing and colorful presence to the space.

Between memory and research
Before its realization, in-depth reflection was conducted on the best way to evoke Belle-Île: its composition, its ports, its architecture, its lights, and its nature. A familiar island, known for its contrasts, its bold colors, its fauna and flora, and all that characterizes it.

As part of the creative process, artificial intelligence was briefly consulted in addition to photographic documentation and visual inspiration. The goal was not to delegate creation, but to explore how this technology could interpret an artistic vision, like a notebook of ideas or a digital moodboard.

No generated image was used as is: the final result is the fruit of many hours of composition, experimentation, and adjustments.
A progressive construction
The visual developed gradually through a dialogue with Sylvain (the client). Exchanges allowed for refining the composition, locating places, and enriching the image throughout the discussions.

The island's emblematic elements find their place here: from the Pointe des Poulains to the Fort Sarah Bernhardt, the draught horses, the Eurasian oystercatcher, typical villages and Breton houses, Menhir Jean, Sauzon and its tide coefficients, Le Palais, VauBan with its Citadel and its Gate of the same name, beaches like Donnant and Grands Sables, the Aiguilles de Port-Coton dear to impressionist painters, the sardine (a nod to the "la belle-iloise" cannery), old sailing ships, sailboats or motor pleasure boats, fishing boats, caravanning, gorse, the Landes, wild heather, Locmaria and its church consecrated in 1070, Port Blanc and Port Maria, Kerdonis Lighthouse, the SNSM, the Compagnie Océane boat that connects the island from Quiberon, as well as the omnipresent gulls, crustaceans, waves and the wild coast... and also, the marinière or the yellow slicker! Etc.

These different landmarks are integrated into a global composition suggesting the shape of the island's map, intertwined with symbolic elements.
All in a contemporary graphic style, combining figuration and abstraction, with bright and primary colors, a graphic energy, and a clean white background that enhances the legibility and luminosity of the whole.

From screen to wall
Once the composition was validated, the visual was prepared for wall printing in 2600 × 1700 mm format (close to 3:2 ratio), landscape orientation.
The production and installation were entrusted to L'Impression Murale, in direct contact with Sylvain for technical aspects and installation planning at the practice.

The final result transforms the digital illustration into an in-situ work, where color and light interact with the space.
A graphic presence that inhabits the place while inviting contemplation.

Extension and edition
From fresco to edition, Belle-Île-en-Mer continues its journey:
A way to offer other lovers of Belle-Île the possibility of preserving an evocation of it, between sensitive cartography and graphic memory.
Two versions are being released:
- Poster BELLE-ÎLE EN MER (1) to rediscover the light and richness of the "real".
- Poster BELLE-ÎLE EN MER (2) to read its lines and structures.
The prints are available in the Fine Art Posters shop!

This project illustrates the richness of a process where memory, technology, and human collaboration intertwine to give birth to an original creation.
A work that explores the boundary between art and narrative, and pays homage to the timeless beauty of Belle-Île-en-Mer.
